Walter Geromet
A visionary musician
Walter Geromet is a multi-instrumentalist, saxophonist, composer, and musical director whose career embodies a deep passion for music and an unwavering commitment to artistic excellence. Born in Trieste, Italy, he graduated with top honors from the G. Tartini Conservatory in 2006, receiving the prestigious Premio de Honor. His studies also took him to Real Conservatorio Superior de Música in Madrid, where he spent an academic year on an Erasmus scholarship. Over the years, he has refined his craft by attending masterclasses with some of the world’s most renowned saxophonists, including Claude Delangle, Vincent David, Arno Bornkamp, and J.M. Londeix in the classical and contemporary fields, as well as Klaus Gesing, José Encarnación, and Bob Sands in jazz. Beyond his work as a saxophonist, Geromet has trained extensively in composition, jazz, orchestral and big band conducting, as well as classical and modern singing.
His remarkable talent has earned him numerous First prizes and special mentions in both national and international music competitions, both as a soloist and as part of a saxophone-piano duo with Raffaele Silvestre. He has triumphed at events such as the Johan Brahms International Competition (Acqui Terme), I giovani per i giovani (Ravenna), and the Soroptimist International Competition (Milan). He was also a finalist at the TIM International Competition (Rome) and later served as a juror alongside Luigi Fait. As a performer, Geromet has taken his saxophone to the international stage, playing at Festivals across Europe and the United States. His duo with Raffaele Silvestre led to the release of the album Two Fantastics in 2006. He is also a long-time member of the Ensemble Eurydice, led by flutist Daniela Pisano, with whom he has performed at Stanford University and Belmont University in the U.S. He has been part of several acclaimed Saxophone Quartets, including the Kromatics Quartet (Selmer Paris artists), performing in Italy, France, and Spain, and the Segment Quartet, with whom he recorded a jazz album featuring one of his own compositions, Coach-it. His career as a soloist with Symphonic bands has led him to perform iconic works such as John Williams’ “Escapades” with the Orchestra a Fiati Val d’Isonzo and “A Gershwin Fantasy” with the Orchestra a Fiati Giuseppe Verdi Città di Trieste. Geromet’s discography highlights his versatility as an artist. His albums Incognito and Plays J.S. Bach showcase his expressive mastery of the curved soprano saxophone, blending original compositions with adaptations of Bach’s music. His creative reach extends to film scoring, composing and performing music for short films and feature films, including Nostalgia en Teherán, featured in Javier Tolentino’s Goya-nominated film Un Blues para Teherán. Additionally, he has published saxophone compositions such as Invenzione (Pizzicato, Italy) and Opacity (Chili Notes, Germany). Passion for Education and Jazz Innovation
Walter Geromet is not only a distinguished performer but also a dedicated educator. Piccinni (Bari, Italy), and numerous masterclasses and summer courses across Europe.
In Madrid, he took his commitment to music education to the next level by founding the Walter Sax Academy, where he has trained over 100 saxophonists, shaping the next generation of jazz musicians. Under his leadership, the Academy has produced large-format jazz ensembles, including the Walter Sax Big Band, WS-3G Big Band, and WS-Z Big Band. These ensembles feature impressive wind sections with 15 saxophones of various registers (sopranos, altos, tenors, and baritones), along with rhythm sections and vocalists. They say about him...Incognito presents the multi-faceted talents of saxophonist Walter Geromet. The 11 original compositions are all surprising in their own respect by the marvellous use of polyphony. Indeed the listener is often asking the question: how many players are in this work? The fact that Geromet is able to simultaneously perform these pieces is remarkable. By adding variety of colour through his many performance skills, he renders these works unique. Only a saxophonist/composer could have written such pieces as they draw on all of the extended techniques professional players continue to develop for their instrument and then some. Voice generated sounds from breathing to humming to percussive explosions and even singing while playing combine with trumpet emboucher vibrations played without the mouthpiece to enhance the gamma of colourful sounds Geromet is able to produce. Compositionally, he is well schooled and all of the motivic material is interesting and clear. Inspired uses of tonality, jazz, ethnic folk melodies and chant are all combined with these extended techniques to truly create something new and listener friendly. If one adds the well produced and masterful use of targeted reverb, then this is a CD full of imaginative music that transports listeners towards new discoveries. Highly recommended...>
